The X-Itools project

X-Itools (eXtended Internet Tools) are a set of internet and intranet tools specially created by some developers of the Linux community. This project is a GNU/GPL project. If you would like to know more on GNU/GPL licence, you must know it was created to protect your freedom, as well as our freedom. So, please take a look at the GNU web site for further information.

The goal

The aim of the X-Itools is to propose an alternative to some well known market products like Microsoft Exchange™ or Lotus Notes/Domino™. X-Itools are already useable and several users as well as some companies use them and are confident with them.

The main features

X-Itools offer you a panel of modules which can be splitted in two main categories: administration features on one hand, and technical (or business oriented) features on the other hand, as related in the table below:

Administration modules Technical modules
  • Shared private and public agenda
  • Shared private and public task manager
  • Shared private and public postit manager (also called notes, or E-postit)
  • Shared public complex processus manager (Tree of tasks with dependencies)
  • Geographically distributed site and visitors manager, with management of pools of badges
  • Time-off manager (vacations, unpaid vacations, illness, trainings, compensation days, ...) with automatic "vacation counters" calculations
  • Shared private and public address book
  • Incoming phone calls manager and tracer
  • Timesheet manager
  • Peripherals and conputers manager with associated history, completed by a password generator and manager, with encrypted storage
  • Security policies manager (firewalls, Nagios monitoring, IDS, ...)
  • Logs manager for CheckPoint firewalls
  • Monitoring tool
Global administration module

Of course, we have plenty of other ideas to implement as new modules.

Furthemore, X-Itools integrate "domains" management features, it means that only one server can take care of several different companies without any kind of link between them. Of course, one user can be a member of several domains, or bridges can be established between different domains.

X-Itools, for who ?

All of you who find X-Itools usefull:

- small user groups
- larger user communities
- public or private institution
- administration and states
- small and medium companies
- large scale companies
- Internet service providers

The coding

This set of tools is coded with C++ using GNU GCC on Linux workstations. The code is distributed over SourceForge. Those tools were tested in real production conditions, in several companies. So, those tools can be used without (important !) risks and the feature requests are regular.

Required infrastructure

Those tools need one or several Apache 1.3.22+ or Apache 2.0+ web servers, one or several Postgresql 7.4 or 8.0+ database servers , a Sendmail 8.11.6+ SMTP server or preferably a Postfix server, or other for the notifications. Of course, only one server is enough to have all the above conditions OK. The OS must be Linux, and we recommand you use a Mandriva or RedHat 9.0 distribution, or preferably a Fedora Core 4, or CentOS 4.2 one. And in the futur, any database server accepting the SQL standard should work fine.

Deployment

Those tools are installed in your infrastructure and they are managed by your own engineers, your own administrators, or by yourself.

You can also subscribe to our different X-Itools services, for a very low cost, and you can obtain the needed X-Itools accounts for your company in a very short time. In this case, no server is installed in your network infrastructure, you even don't have to think about it. We open you accounts on the servers we manage ourselves, we give you one (or several) administrator accounts, a (or several) domain corresponding to your company, and you just have to connect on our servers to use all the X-Itools modules: this is easy, it is secure and it is fast: you don't have management problems, you always have the latest features of the latest X-Itools versions, the servers are secured, and you benefit of the bandwidth of an important Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Additionnal services

If this set of tools is under GNU/GPL licence, this is to guarantee they will be available for all. Then, they can be downloaded for free. But, all additional services like training courses, advanced support, as well as other kind of services have a cost. So, X-Itools allow you to save a lot of money compared to the solutions of other major editors of the market. In fact this is the main word: saving time because based on a reliable and powerfull system, and of course saving money because they can be downloaded for nothing and because the total cost of ownership is nothing. The X-Itools solution is good for all.

Finally, those tools are based only on living, open and established standards. There is no bad surprises. The licence give you the unlimited right to have access to the source code. So you can have the insurance there is no trojan horses, backdoors, your personnal data are not sent accross the public network or to an eventually well known company, ... You control the product, from the point of vue of the usage and from the point of view of the security: for the first time you are the master of your product and you don't depend of it.

Want to know more ?

Start to browse the different web pages of this site. You will learn what are the existing modules, by reading their descriptions and by viewing screenshots.

You can also directly test the X-Itools but in a very limited version (because publicly available) by requesting us a demo account or by using a pre-defined anonymous account.

If you are interested to help us in our coding, you can subscribe to our different mailing-lists but you can also take a look at the SourceForge web site, where this project is hosted.

The documentation is here to help you, as well as some FAQs.

But if, by lack of chance, you don't find any answer to your problem on this web site, you can still contact us here.
